Chapter 25

George parked the car, and we agreed to go for a coffee at the café in the square.

I was still angry. He kept apologizing, but it wasn’t enough. It would never be enough. There’s no excuse for such behavior. People always have a choice. The argument that you made me do it is bullshit.

We ordered coffee and took a seat.

George stared at me across the table, but I couldn’t meet his eyes yet.

“As I’ve already told you, the last thing I remember is me dancing with Nasos. We were talking. He was already drunk, and he came onto me. I told him I wasn’t interested, and then he gave me a drink as an apology.”

“That was nice of him,” George said and sipped his coffee, the contempt in his voice obvious. He adjusted himself on the seat. Something about this conversation was making him uncomfortable. “Maybe you drank too much. Does alcohol affect you like that?”

“I didn’t have that much.” I didn’t want to tell him about my anti-anxiety medication. These conversations had three possible endings. The first would be advice to quit the drugs because they’re bad for me, and I seem fine. The second would be a discussion of whether I’m crazy or not, and the third would be people sympathizing with my problem. These kinds of chats ended with me looking bad, so I wasn’t interested in opening up further. “Just tell me what I did at the party.”

“You danced with everyone. You teased everyone. You were loud and annoying people.”

“Okay, then what?”

“Then you asked me where the bathroom was, and I lost you for a while.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

I leaned closer. “Then?”

“Then I saw you sitting by yourself, looking around. You seemed quite wasted. I asked you if you wanted a ride home. You told me you had already arranged it. Then something got your attention, and you just left.”

“Did you see Nasos during the night?”

“I saw him dancing with you. Then, honestly, I wasn’t paying attention to him.”

“Where did they find him?”

“Near the back corner of our house is a shed where we keep gardening tools. I have no idea what he was doing over there.”

An image of the interior of a wooden shed came to my mind and made me lose my breath.

“Is your shed made of wood? With a lot of empty shelves?”

“Actually, yes. Have you seen it?”

My stomach filled with acid. I felt like I was suffocating as if there was no air coming or going from my lungs. I had to keep it together, though. My hand shook as I tried to drink water. I don’t recall going to the shed at all.

“I toured your house when I first arrived. I was as curious as everyone else.” I lied. “Did you hear anything about the murder weapon?”

“They were looking for anything that could be a weapon. They told us to evacuate the house, so we spent Sunday and Monday at a hotel. I don’t think they found anything. Unless they did find something and didn’t want it leaking to the press.
